Action Steps & Tips
Introduction
Read on to learn how to find and register for certified First Aid and CPR training, as well as where to find the basic online FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) training on what to do if someone falls ill or injured, “You are the help until help arrives”. Many emergencies are unexpected - be it a car accident, natural disaster, or an accidental workplace injury, you may happen to be nearby and could make a difference and save a life by taking a couple of simple actions!
1Step 1: Take a First Aid Class!
Both the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association offer certified basic first aid and CPR training, with a combo of online and hands-on in-person courses. They are usually 5-10 hours and cost $80-150. They are often cheaper when purchased as a group - so why not gather some friends and neighbors and get trained together!
You can find classes and register here:
-
Red Cross: https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class or call (888) 230-4219
-
American Heart Association: https://cpr.heart.org/en/cpr-courses-and-kits or call (877) 242-4277
Which course is right for you? Most courses cover basic first aid, CPR, and AED (automated external defibrillator), which is used if someone’s heart stops. Others also cover pediatric and infant care. If you have children or are often in proximity of kids or infants, it’s a good idea to take a course that includes pediatric and infant care.
